Late Bollywood actor Om Puri’s wife, Nandita Puri, recently revealed that the actor’s financial constraints during their wedding prevented him from purchasing jewellery for her. Nandita shared that Om Puri couldn’t afford to “buy a mangalsutra or wedding ring” due to the financial difficulties. However, he did purchase jewellery for her after securing a role in Jack Nicholson’s film.
Om Puri married author-journalist Nandita after divorcing his former wife and actor Annu Kapoor’s sister, Seema Kapoor. In an interview with Siddharth Kannan, Nandita disclosed that when Om married Seema, he “didn’t have much, except for one flat and a little piece of land in Rajasthan”, which he had to give to Seema for eight to nine months of their marriage.
She said, “Om ji told me, ‘I don’t have money for a mangalsutra for you, I don’t have much now, but I have two hands, and I will see to it that you are fine.’ From that point, we went so many steps ahead.”
Additionally, the author, journalist stated that the actor gave her a mangalsutra “six or seven months after our marriage” when Om Puri landed a role in the Hollywood romantic-horror film Wolf, starring Jack Nicholson.
She said, “He got a first-class ticket and told me, ‘Let’s go to the US. I will convert this into two business class tickets and your honeymoon will be in LA, Hollywood!’ Much after we got back, he got me a mangalsutra and a wedding ring!”
Om Puri and Nandita Puri’s marriage allegedly hit rock bottom after the latter published the actor’s biography. Reportedly, Nandita also filed a case of domestic violence against the Ardh actor in 2017. Om Puri died in the same year.
